About This Kumon Analysis
Editorial independence, data sources, and the limits of what we were able to verify.
What This Is
Franchise Financing Guide is an independent resource for prospective franchise investors. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by, or compensated by Kumon North America, Inc. or any franchise broker. No franchisor has editorial input into our analysis, and no franchisor pays for placement or favourable coverage.
This vertical covers the Kumon franchise opportunity from the prospective buyer’s perspective: what the franchise costs, how it operates, what the financial structure looks like, and what publicly available owner accounts describe about the day-to-day reality. It exists because the information a prospective Kumon franchisee needs is scattered across franchise directories, forum threads, and secondhand summaries — and much of it conflicts.
Our independence applies specifically to the franchise systems we cover. We are not franchise brokers. We do not sell franchises. We do not earn referral fees from franchisors. Our analysis is designed to serve the prospective buyer — the person writing the cheque — not the person selling the opportunity.
Lenders that specialise in franchise financing, such as Lendesca, can model the financial scenarios described in our analysis against specific capital structures. We mention financing resources where editorially relevant to the buyer’s decision process.
Methodology
Our Kumon analysis is built on secondary sources. We state this plainly because it matters:
We have not read the Kumon FDD directly. All figures are drawn from secondary sources. Where multiple sources disagree, we have either used the figure where two independent sources agree or withheld the figure entirely.
Sources
- Franchise directories. Entrepreneur’s Franchise 500, FranchiseVS, Franchise Direct, and similar aggregators that compile FDD-sourced data. These are our primary source for fee structures and system statistics.
- Kumon’s public buyer FAQs. The franchisor’s own website publishes answers to common prospective-franchisee questions, including the proficiency assessment requirement, the owner-operator requirement, and the general investment range.
- Public review sites and forum discussions. Franchise owner forums, review aggregators, and discussion threads where current and former Kumon franchisees describe their experiences publicly. These inform the owner-experience analysis and are cited as public sources, not as interviews we conducted.

- Franchise fee: $2,000 (confirmed across multiple independent directories)
- Royalty structure and rate
- Agreement term: 5 years
- Owner-operator requirement: yes, with proficiency assessment
- Item 19 financial performance representation: absent from recent FDD filings (confirmed by multiple directories noting its absence)
What was NOT verified — and why
- Total initial investment. Four incompatible ranges are in circulation across franchise directories. Without the FDD itself, we cannot determine which is current. We have withheld a single definitive range rather than publish one that may be wrong.
- Worldwide unit counts. Kumon operates globally with thousands of centres, but the split between company-owned and franchised, and the count of North American units specifically, varies by source and year. We cite directional figures where relevant and label them as estimates.
- Net worth and liquidity requirements. Reported thresholds differ across directories. We have noted the range of reported figures rather than selecting one.
Items we could not verify to the standard required for publication were either withheld entirely or presented as a range of reported figures with the source conflict noted. We will update this analysis when we obtain direct access to the current FDD.
What we do not do
We do not conduct interviews with current or former franchisees for editorial content. We do not publish invented owner quotes, composite profiles, or personas presented as real people. Owner-experience analysis on this site describes patterns that recur across publicly available reviews, forum discussions, and disclosed data, and is written as analysis in our own voice rather than as testimony.
